Have you ever felt abandoned? Felt so pressured that sometimes it feels like you’re sacrificing yourself? Felt trapped and suffocated? Failed at something and then sank into disappointment? Tested so severely that it feels overwhelming?
We feel as though we are alone. No one wants to hear our story. We feel that no help is coming. Worse yet, there are times when our disappointment leads us to lose faith in Allah SWT. We think…
Allah has abandoned me.
Be calm. Truly calm.
Indeed, help will come.
The Reality of Trials
Everything that brings difficulty is a test. Every comfort is also a test. Do not feel constrained when something troubles you. Learn to keep an open heart. You must believe that life itself is a test. Yes, life itself is a trial, hardships and ease, all are tests.
What truly matters is not whether your test is easy or hard. What matters is why Allah gives the test. Why does He not make everything easy?
The answer is here:
“Do the people think that they will be left alone because they say: ‘We believe,’ and will not be tested? And indeed, We have tested those before them, so that Allah may make clear those who are truthful, and make clear those who are liars.”
Surah Al-Ankabut, 2–3
Yes, trials are meant to test faith. That is their essence. Whether in hardship or in ease, all tests aim to measure faith.
So, if you feel abandoned by Allah, what does that say about your faith?
Remain Trusting
One message from Ustaz Mahadzir (Head Warden of MATRI) I will never forget:
“Hilal, you must have good assumptions about Allah.”
Yes, trust that Allah, who organizes everything, knows what is best for us. Do we realize that everything Allah arranges in our lives is ultimately for our good?
“It may be that you dislike something although it is good for you, and it may be that you love something although it is bad for you. And Allah knows while you do not know.”
Surah Al-Baqarah, 216
So why shouldn’t we trust Allah SWT, when He is All-Knowing, and we know nothing?
Yes, it is hard. Truly hard. I often say: if you desire a paradise whose pleasures have never been seen by the eye or imagined in the soul, then surely the effort required shakes the world.
That is why Allah says:
“Do you think that you will enter Paradise while not yet having faced trials as those before you did? They were afflicted with poverty, diseases, and shaken by threats, until the Prophet and the believers with him said: ‘When will Allah’s help come?’ Know that Allah’s help is near — if only you are patient and hold firmly to His religion.”
Surah Al-Baqarah, 214
They were tested until they asked: “Where is Allah’s help?”
Indeed, Allah’s help is always near. Do you believe this?
After Hardship Comes Ease
Every difficulty we face will eventually end. But how strong is our patience? Here is where self-reflection is essential.
Every hardship is accompanied by ease for those who are steadfast.
“So truly, with hardship comes ease. Truly, with hardship comes ease.”
Surah Al-Sharh, 5–6
And as Allah says in the previous surah:
“By the morning brightness, and by the night when it covers with darkness, your Lord has not forsaken you, nor does He hate you.”
Surah Ad-Dhuha, 1–3
Allah does not hate us, nor does He abandon us. In tafsir, the word Dhuha (morning) is used because it is the time when the sun rises and the world is bright, representing relief and ease. And night is used because it is dark, symbolizing hardship. So when Allah says, “and by the night when it covers with darkness,” it reminds us that hardship will pass, and relief will come.
These verses were revealed when Rasulullah SAW faced extreme difficulties and felt as though Allah had left him. They are a source of comfort, for his soul, and for ours affirming that we have faith in Him.
In the End, Those Who Persevere Will Find Happiness
I believe the most difficult journey in human history is the life of Rasulullah SAW. He began his mission under extreme hardship: mocked, insulted, attacked, physically harmed, betrayed by hypocrites, and many other trials. In Makkah, he and his followers endured years of isolation, even surviving on dry leaves.
Yet, he and his companions remained steadfast. They trusted Allah’s promises, never idle, striving diligently to fulfill them.
In the end, we witness their glory and success in the final stages of Rasulullah’s mission.
Hardship does not always suffocate us. For those who remain calm, there is sweetness even in bitterness.
But who truly has faith?
