The Significance of Praying on Time

The Importance of Maintaining Salah (Prayer)

Salah must be preserved so that we are not punished by Allah in the Hereafter. What is truly sad in today’s world is that, wherever we look, many people consider prayer to be trivial. They neglect it, show no respect for it, and some even, after completing prayer, forget their Lord and commit sins… it’s true! This is the reality.

There are many warnings regarding Salah, among them:

1. Surah Maryam (59-60)

“Then came after them a generation who wasted (أضاعوا) prayer and followed their desires, and they will go astray — except those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds.”

Ibn Abbas (RA) said: “The word (أضاعوا) means abandoning prayer, but it also includes delaying it.”

2. According to Sai’d Al-Musayyid (d. 97 H)

“Those who do not pray Dhuhr until Asr, and do not pray Asr until Maghrib… if they leave prayer without repenting to Allah, their place will be in the lowest depths of the Fire, and Allah has promised them the worst of food.”

3. Surah Al-Ma’un (4)

“So woe to those who pray, but are heedless in their prayers.”

Sa’id bin Abi Waqas (RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was asked about this verse. He explained that it refers to those who delay their prayers. These people are filled with humiliation, and Allah promises them the Hellfire of Wail — the harshest punishment. Its heat is so intense that if the world were shaken there, it would crumble.

It is a place of disgrace for those who delay their prayers, except for those who repent to Allah and regret their actions.
— Imam adz-Dzahabi (d. 748 H)

In fact, there are many warnings for those who postpone prayer.

What is even more striking is that today, if there is a concert, festival, or any entertainment, people rush to attend it with zeal. Even more heartbreaking is when a funeral prayer or hajat prayer promises some worldly reward — people rush to attend it. Yet for Fajr prayer, how difficult it is for people to go to the mosque…

Where, then, is our faith in Allah? Do we have partners with Him that take priority over Him? حي على الصلاة (Come to prayer!)
